Was there ever a time growing up when you were given something and told that it was yours. I can recall countless times when I was given an expensive toy and my mother would say, “Now if you take care of it, you’ll have it for a long time. But if you don’t treat it right, then it will break and I’m not buying another one.” There was something glorious about knowing that this possession was my responsibility alone. And even at the age of 7 or 8 I could feel the slightest featherweight of responsibility rest on my shoulders and I stood a little taller to compensate.
Just as I was entrusted with the care of my toys when I was young, each of us have been entrusted with a life, a mind, and a soul, for better or for worst. God wants us to use these gifts for our benefit but more importantly, His glory. The responsibility to “look after ourselves” and make wise choices, was placed upon us from birth. God tells us early on that, “Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.” Proverbs 20:11
God tells us that we also will reap the rewards of our choices. “If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.” – Proverb 9:12 God has put the ball in your court. You are responsible for yourself. We cannot blame people and we cannot blame situations. God promises a way of escape for every temptation, so no one ever “made” us do it.
You are your responsibility alone. If you make wrong choices, you bear the shame and the blame. But if you make right choices, you are wise for yourself, and you will reap the reward of your decisions.
Let’s be wise for ourselves!
